Self-paying patients

Costs for self-paying patients

Self-paying patients are patients with statutory or private health insurance who are not eligible for coverage through the German statutory health insurance (GKV) providers, as well as private patients not eligible for coverage through their private health insurer.

As for private patients, services for self-paying patients are billed in accordance with legal requirements using the German fee schedule for physicians’ billing (GOÄ). The invoicing follows what is known as the ‘individual service principle’. Usually, self-paying patients are billed below the so-called “threshold value”, as a result of which an invoice for a self-paying patient is lower (sometimes considerably so) than that for private patients approved for private insurance coverage. Use of a factor of less than 1.0 is not permitted. Lump sum prices and giving services away free of charge is also prohibited.

Treatment can also be performed regardless of marital status and age.
